Calatrava

The pure form of the dress watch

The Calatrava is the design foundation of Patek Philippe. A round case, clear proportions, no distraction — a watch that adds nothing that is not necessary.

History

The evolution of the Calatrava

In 1932, the first year under the Stern family, the Ref. 96 appeared. Its plain, strictly round form drew on Bauhaus principles and defined what a dress watch should look like.

The name refers to the Calatrava cross, the emblem of a Spanish order of knights that Patek Philippe has used as its trademark since 1887.

Over the decades numerous interpretations emerged: the Ref. 2526 with an enamel dial is considered by many collectors one of the most beautiful wristwatches ever made. The Ref. 3919 with its Clous de Paris bezel defined the 1980s and 1990s.

Current references such as the 6119 revisit the guilloché bezel and pair it with modern in-house movements.

Collector's perspective

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

The Calatrava is often undervalued in the market relative to the sports models — an advantage for collectors focused on watchmaking.

  2. 02

On vintage references, dial condition is decisive. Enamel dials with hairline cracks are practically impossible to restore.

  3. 03

Gold cases of this type were frequently polished. A case with preserved edge sharpness is rare and justifies a significant premium.

  4. 04

Smaller diameters of 33 to 36 millimetres are once again seeing growing demand.
