Luminor

The crown-guard bridge as a signature

The Luminor is Panerai's best-known face. The patented bridge over the crown presses it against the case and makes the watch instantly recognisable at a glance.

History

The evolution of the Luminor

In 1949 Panerai patented Luminor, a tritium-based luminous compound that replaced the radium-based Radiomir.

During the 1950s the case gained the crown-guard bridge with its locking lever — originally devised as a sealing aid for naval operations.

The Luminor became a series model with the first civilian collection of 1993. Pieces made through 1997 are known today as pre-Vendôme.

From 2005 came models with in-house calibres, including the P.2002 with eight days of power reserve, and the Luminor Due as a slimmer variant.

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

Pre-Vendôme models made before 1997, along with early special editions, form the market's upper segment.

  2. 02

The PAM number determines valuation; discrepancies between case, dial and papers are a warning sign.

  3. 03

A complete set includes a spare strap, screwdriver and outer box — missing items reduce the price.
