Polaris

The dive watch with an inner rotating ring

The Polaris traces its lineage to the 1968 Memovox Polaris — a dive watch with an alarm function and a triple case back. Since 2018 it has stood as an independent, sport-oriented collection.

History

The evolution of the Polaris

In 1950 Jaeger-LeCoultre unveiled the Memovox with its mechanical alarm. In 1959 came the Memovox Deep Sea, the first dive watch with an audible warning.

In 1968 the Memovox Polaris appeared in a run of roughly 1,700 pieces. Its triple case back kept the alarm audible underwater.

In 2008 the manufacture released a limited re-edition. In 2018, on the fiftieth anniversary, Polaris became its own collection with Date, Chronograph, World Time and Memovox models.

What remained constant was operation via two crowns: one for the time, one for the rotating inner ring.

What to look for when buying

  1. 01

Original 1968 Memovox Polaris watches are rare and command a considerable premium over the modern versions at auction.

  2. 02

The alarm mechanism must always be function-tested: repairs are involved and only a handful of workshops handle them well.

  3. 03

The modern models are comparatively young; completeness of box, papers and the extra strap is expected on resale.
